For the past ten years of my life, I have always had a plan as to what I wanted to do with my life. Sometimes, the plan slightly changed, but the end result, so far, has not. Basically, I know what I want from my life, what I want to do, who I want to be, and where I want to be.
When I speak to some people who tell me, “I have no idea what I want to do with my life”, I really feel awkward. I honestly have no idea what to tell them. Do not think for a second that I am “lucky”. There will always be doubt when you’ve thought for years that you know what you want to do with your life, and suddenly at one point, you tell yourself, this is not what I want to do with my life. However, my main concern is for those who are seeking themselves and their purpose.
First off, there is nothing wrong in not knowing what you want to do with your life. It is normal. The world is a big place and there are so many opportunities; you just have to know which opportunities are the right ones for you. Many people immediately think that travelling is the best option to finding yourself, which I agree with, however if you are to travel, you need to be open to experiencing new things and meeting new people. You need to get out of your comfort zone and put an effort. Sticking to the same mentality and expecting to suddenly “find yourself” will not work.
Finding yourself is harder than it seems. I think that the best way to find yourself is to always ask yourself; Is this what I want? Is this really the me who I want to be? This does not mean to always be doubtful, but to simply reflect on your actions. It could be that you think that what you are doing is good for yourself, but in reality, it’s not. This is when you need to change what you are doing, to always seek what you think you should really be doing. You can find yourself in what you are doing in life, and I think that that means being happy.
This is also linked to finding your purpose in life. Again, this is not easy and it takes time. Everyone needs to grow and learn from the past to build a future that they want. There are so many countries all around the world; maybe change of place is the best for you, but it is not the best for everyone. Maybe it is a change in the way one thinks, or changing your job. What’s important is that you do not become lazy. Lazy and comfort mean the same thing. They are both negative. They can both refer to giving up and “settling”. Never settle for what is easy; to get what you want, you need to work hard, harder than anything you’ve ever done in your life before.
Finally, there are some people who do know what they want to do with their life but have no courage or support to do so. To these people, I tell you to not give up on your dreams. Life is so so short and we need to live every second of it doing what we want to do. There will be moments where we will suffer for long-term gains. Of course there will be. However, the gains will be worth it. Put aside the people who simply do not understand, they are negative, and put all your energy into achieving what you want.
A quote by e.e. cummings which I hold to heart is; it takes courage to grow up and become who you truly are. He’s definitely right.
